Books in print and forthcoming books

Books in print and forthcoming books

As Canadianists, we are often faced with the need for up-to-date information about Canadian books - the exact title, the price, whether a particular work is still in print. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to find this kind of information on the Web. The logical source - "Canadian Books in Print" - is not freely accessible. The only solution is to try a variety of sites. What follows is a list of the ones that seem to be most useful. As we would like to keep revising this site, any tips would be welcome: please send them to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Bookstores

Probably the easiest way is to search a book vendor's Website. Of course these are not comprehensive, and they tend not to include less well-known books as well as books published by small presses, but they do include a lot of the books we're interested in. Two of the largest on-line sites are:

http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/

Publishers

If you know the publisher, you could also go to his/her Website. The directory of Canadian publishers' Web sites is as follows:

http://www.publishers.ca/

National Library of Canada

One special service offered by the National Library of Canada is particularly useful for obtaining information about books that have appeared in the past few years. The "Forthcoming Books" lists are processed by the National Library's Canadian Cataloguing in Publication (CIP) program. Approximately 1600 publishers participate in the CIP program; in addition, the major publications of the federal government are covered, as are publications of the provincial governments of British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Ontario. Each month brings a new list of forthcoming titles, and these are also archived on the Web site, going back several years. The books are listed according to category, and within each category alphabetically by author, so it is easy to find what is new in the field you are interested in. This site can be found at

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/index-e.html

Books on Canada

The Association for the Export of Canadian Books publishes an annual catalogue with a good selection of books published the previous year, both in English and French, that covers the whole field of Canadian Studies. Five sents of these books are then sent in the form of a travelling exhibition to Canadian Studies events round the world. Many of you will have seen this exhibition at the Brno conference, or at the annual conference of the Association of Canadianists in the German-speaking Countries (GKS) in Grainau, and so know that it is a very handy source of information on some of the most recent books of interest to Candianists. To access the last four years of the catalogue, entitled Books on Canada, enter the Association's website at http://www.aecb.org and then click on "Outstanding Canadian Books" ("Le prestige des livres canadiennes" in the French version). The entries on the individual books have brief descriptions of the contents, and give all the details needed for ordering them (publisher, price, ISBN number and so on).

Central European Association for Canadian Studies (CEACS)

Central European Association for Canadian Studies (CEACS)

These grants are intended for members in good standing of the CEACS to enable them to attend conferences in the field of Canadian Studies or with a Canadian Studies content. The number of conference grants in each year varies. They are awarded in two rounds, spring and fall. The November call includes grants for positions at the annual conference of the Association for Canadian Studies in the German-speaking Countries (GKS), which is held each year in February at Grainau in southern Bavaria.

NOTE: Members may not apply for this grant for conferences held in consecutive Canadian fiscal years (which run from 1 April to 31 March), nor are they eligible to receive this grant for more than one conference held in any Canadian fiscal year. The spring call for applications applies to conferences between 1 April and 31 December; the fall call to conferences between 1 August and 31 March (hence past conferences are also eligible).

Regular conference grants

Conditions

Regular conference grant are intended for CEACS members who wish to present a paper in the field of Canadian Studies at a conference, seminar or other scholarly gathering. Applications should contain the following:

● a short CV (one page maximum);
● the title, venue and dates of the event the applicant wishes to attend; this may be anywhere except in the applicant's home country;
● a brief abstract of the paper to be delivered (one page maximum);
● a statement that the paper has been accepted, or at least submitted to the conference organizers. In the latter case, any grant awarded the applicant will be conditional, and only finalized when confirmation has been received that the paper has been accepted.

NOTE:
1. The paper cannot have been presented previously at some other conference.
2. Grants are not available for participation in the CEACS's triennial international conference.

Selection criteria

In making decisions, in addition to the proposal itself the following two factors may be taken into consideration:

● Fair distribution of grants - whether applicants have recently been chosen for a grant of this type (all things being equal, preference is given to newcomers);

● Representativity - achieving an adequate representation of the different countries in the CEACS may also be taken into account in the selections.

Deadlines for submission of applications to the CEACS Vice-President ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ), with a copy to the CEACS Secretariat ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ):
March 31 and November 30 of each year

Grainau conference grants

Conditions

Places are reserved each year at Grainau for members of the CEACS. Presentation of papers at this conference is by invitation, so there is no requirement for applicants for this grant to present papers there. Applications should contain the following:

● a short CV (one page maximum)
● an explanation as to why the individual wishes to attend the Grainau conference, in particular the relationship between the theme of the conference and the applicant's teaching, research, etc. (one page maximum).

Selection criteria

In addition to the proposal, two particular considerations are taken into account in selecting the participants:

● Those interested in attending should be have some professional interest in the central topic of the conference in question.

● In line with the wishes of the GKS, preference is given to those who have not attended a previous GKS conference, or those for whom there has been a lapse of several years since they last attended.

Brno research grants

The Canadian Studies Centre at Masaryk University in Brno has an extensive collection comprising around 4,000 books, 180 videos and DVDs, many sound recordings and runs of a number of scholarly journals - the richest Canadian Studies collection in the Central European region.

In order to encourage the widest possible use of these resources, the CEACS offers Canadianists the opportunity to visit Brno for research stays. The grant covers:
● accommodation for up to six nights
● the cost of photocopying materials (up to a maximum of 600 CZK).

Those eligible include students at both the MA and PhD levels preparing theses as well as teachers undertaking research for a particular project, preparing a new course, etc.

Students and teachers wishing to come to Brno should submit a brief description of why they would like to use the facilities at Masaryk University; in addition, students should include a note from a teacher confirming their status. Applications should be sent to Zuzana Janouskova ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) at the CEACS Secretariat.

NOTE: Applications should be sent at least two months before the planned visit, in order to ensure that accommodation can be arranged.

The library at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University, where most of the collection is housed, is usually closed for some time during the summer (for details contact Zuzana Janouskova). During this period research stays are not possible.

Deadline for submission of applications to the CEACS Secretariat ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ): any time during the year

European Seminar for Graduate Students in Canadian Studies travel grants

For almost twenty years the European Network for Canadian Studies (ENCS) has been sponsoring an annual seminar for graduate students in Canadian Studies, which is usually held towards the end of September or at the beginning of October. The national and regional Canadian Studies associations in Europe take turns in hosting the event, with the result that the venue shifts from year to year.

The Central European Association for Canadian Studies makes available grants to student members whose papers have been accepted for presentation at the seminar. These grants cover the cost of travel, to a maximum of 200 euros.

The application for the grant should include a brief abstract of the paper the student will be presenting at the seminar, as well as confirmation that it has been accepted by the seminar organizers. In addition, some document attesting to the cost of the ticket (air, train, coach) should be attached.
